Caesar Column Ignatius Donnelly 9781375007528 Books Reviews

Like many utopian/dystopian writers, Donnelly has fun showing us the technological changes the future will bring (for good or ill). Weltstein travels to New York by airship; he is dazzled by the city's brilliant illumination, powered by tapping into the Aurora Borealis. In the city, subways run below transparent sidewalks. At the Hotel Darwin, Weltstein finds a televised menu to guide him among exotic choices, from edible spiders to bird's nests from China. Televised newspapers are readily available (an anticipation of the Internet).

It's fun to see the how accurate Donnelly was in many of his predictions, considering the book was written in 1890. As fun as these technological predictions are (and correct) the sad thing is the predictions of the political and geopolitical situation is frightening accurate as well.

This book will leave you thinking more about today than Orwell's 1984.
Caesar's Column is strongly rooted in Donnelly's commitment to agrarian Populism. In 1892, two years after the publication of his novel, Donnelly drafted the platform of the Populist Party, in which he wrote,

"A vast conspiracy against mankind has been organized on two continents, and it is rapidly taking possession of the world. If not met and overthrown at once it forebodes terrible social convulsions, the destruction of civilization, or the establishment of an absolute despotism."

What is amazing is how true this was up to then end of the USSR, and today, in 2009, we are wondering if the end of the `American Empire' is ending too. With talk that Oil will no longer be priced in US dollars, and the Chine selling their US dollar reserves, perhaps this book is more on target today than when it was published. That is scary! Reading this book is like reading today's headlines!
The full title of this book when published was Caesar's Column A Story of the Twentieth Century - is a novel by Ignatius Donnelly, famous as the author of Atlantis The Antediluvian World. Caesar's Column was published pseudonymously in 1890 to protect the author from `unknown or mysterious attacks'. Since then the book has been variously categorized as science fiction, speculative fiction, dystopian fiction, and/or apocalyptic fiction; one critic has termed it an "Apocalyptic Utopia." However, no matter which way you perceive it, it is a wonderful gift to the genre, and fascinating to read.

This is a `populist' view of the way things would go for good, and for bad, as Donnelly describes both and both are very interesting. As we are reading this book 120 years after it was written, it's fascinating on a different level to see this book in light of predictions that could have happened, or may still. The more I read the book, the more I was compelled by it. Its well worth reading a 2nd or 3rd time. Glad to see it back in print.
This novel is now in open source and can be found for free on several websites. SO save your money, unless you MUST have a hard copy (paperback).
Awesome,

Well worth your time...
Gives rea;;ife picture of the period as well as the real like people. I am fond of the period and would like to read more about it.
It's bound to happen but probably not as a proliteriat revolution. Very dated but rratively well thought out.
