After reading fictional pirate stories, it was very interesting to read about some real life pirates. This FREE book was better than some books I've paid for. It really adds to the history and geography of this country, as well as others, to read about how prominent a place the pirates played in our history. Who knew Christopher Columbus was one of the first pirates to come to this country and was a slave trader, kidnapping natives of the West Indies and selling them as slaves in Spain until old Queen Isabella caught him and set them free? The kids would remember history like this.Product details

Buccaneers and Pirates of Our Coasts Frank R Stockton 9781117709260 Books Reviews
As a pirate fan, I really enjoyed this book. It tells the true stories of the brethren of the coast along with some historical information about how and why buccaneering began, and evolved, in the Caribbean. Some of the stories are hair-raising, some are amusing, all are interesting.
What makes this book worthy of five-stars is the authors ability to tell a story as if you ere in the same room. I'd read any book written by Stockton with his down-to-earth approach. Few authors really deserve five stars and yet Stockton really nailed it with this one!
Some of the facts weren't accurate, but they more than made up for it with the content and information that I didn't know. Just because they got a name wrong doesn't mean the whole book was bad.
The more I read by Frank Stockton, the more I marvel that he's not more highly rated as an author. He writes wonderfully entertaining short stories and very readable history. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and it's references to American coastal history. recommended to anyone with an interest in nautical history and real-life adventure.
This book provides fascinating, detailed stories, written from the perspective of the 19th Century. I disagree that it is badly written, It's just written in the vernacular of it's day. Plus, there are several witty asides and comments on the antics and motivations of the protagonists that I thoroughly enjoyed. If it has any fault, for me, it's that it's narrative can get overly long in some places.
First published in 1898, at a time when pulp-fiction was hitting its stride with wild west stories, Stockton presents us with a series of semi-biographies of pirates from the 18th century and later. He focuses primarily on the buccaneers, but verges over into the Golden Age of Piracy for the last few pirates. The list of pirates chronicled include Peter the Great (aka Pierre Le Grand), Bartholemy Portuguez, John Esquemeling, Roc Braziliano, Francois L'Olonnois, Henry Morgan, Raveneau de Lussan, Blackbeard (aka Edward Teach), Stede Bonnet, Richard Worley, Mary Read, Anne Bonny, Edward Low, Jean Lafitte and William Kidd.
There is a basis in fact, much of it taken from the writing of John Esquemeling. The author has also seen fit to flesh out the stories with fictional bits, meant to make for more entertaining reading (a la pulp fiction). And, it is entertaining reading. The stories have also been sanitized for younger readers, so parents do not need to worry about excessive violence and unsavory images. My version has only two pictures, the cover and the title page.
Overall, this is an excellent semi-introduction to pirates once young readers have passed the level of picture books like the Eyewitness series. I would put the age scale at about pre-teens to early teens.
A very interesting work relating to real life pirates. It doesn't bog down with overly detailed descriptions or biographies of said pirates and is a relatively short read. Also, it's free, so why not expand your knowledge of pirates beyond simply that of Long John Silver, Captain Morgan and One-Eyed Willie (yes, Willie and Silver are fictional characters but I bet most people you asked would claim that they were real).
